Safety first

Stop using your dryer if...

These signs mean something is wrong with heat or airflow. Running more loads can make it worse.

  1. 01

    You smell burning

A scorched or hot-dust smell usually points to lint near the heat source or a failing part. Turn it off and unplug it.

  2. 02

The cabinet is very hot to touch

The top and sides should feel warm, not hot. Excess heat often means the exhaust is blocked and air has nowhere to go.

  3. 03

    It shuts off mid-cycle

A dryer that keeps stopping may be tripping a safety limit because it is overheating. Restarting it does not fix the cause.

  4. 04

Drying takes far longer than it used to

Two or three cycles for one load is a common sign of restricted airflow, which also makes the machine run hotter.

Common dryer problems

What we fix most often

Most clothes dryer repair comes down to a short list of symptoms. Here is what each one usually means, so you know what to tell us when you call.

  • Not heating

Tumbles fine but blows cool air. Often a heating element, igniter, thermal fuse or thermostat.

  • Takes too long to dry

Usually airflow: a packed lint path, crushed transition hose or blocked exterior vent hood.

  • Won't start

Lights but no motion, or nothing at all. Door switch, start switch, thermal fuse, belt switch or power supply.

  • Won't tumble

Motor hums but the drum stays still. A broken drive belt or seized idler pulley is the usual suspect.

  • Loud squealing or thumping

Worn drum rollers, glides, idler pulley or a flat-spotted belt. Noise tends to get worse, not better.

  • Shuts off mid-cycle

Overheating, a weak motor or a failing control. We find out which before replacing anything.

Electric dryer repair

Electric dryers run on a 240-volt circuit and heat with a coil element. We test the element, thermal fuse, high-limit and cycling thermostats, timer or control board, motor, belt and rollers, then replace only the parts that have failed.

FAQ

Dryer questions we hear every week

On an electric dryer, the most common causes are a burned-out heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed cycling thermostat. On a gas dryer, look first at the igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils. A restricted vent can also trip safety parts, so a fuse that blows again after replacement points to an airflow problem that needs fixing too.
